KVK-Longleng organizes training on sustainable millet cultivation practices

Participants during the training on Sustainable Practices of Millets to Manage Resource Depletion training programme.

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 11 (MExN): ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Longleng, Nagaland, conducted a training programme focused on “Sustainable Practices of Millets to Manage Resource Depletion.”

The event, held at the KVK office, brought together 42 participants, including young farmers, representatives from Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Farmers Producer Organisations (FPOs), and progressive individual farmers.

Millets are gaining recognition as a crucial grain due to their high nutrient content, which includes dietary fiber, minerals, protein, iron, magnesium, essential fatty acids, and B-vitamins like calcium, zinc, and potassium. In addition to their nutritional benefits, millets require minimal maintenance, are drought-resistant, and mature faster than traditional cereal crops like rice and wheat, making them a sustainable option in the face of resource depletion.

The programme was led by Dr. H.C. Kalita, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK-Longleng, and chaired by Dr. Lily Ngullie, ACTO Animal Science. Dr. Ngullie encouraged the farmers to adopt millet cultivation with good agricultural practices to enhance production and productivity.

Dr. Pallabi Phukan, SMS (Social Sciences), coordinated the event and delivered a comprehensive session on the importance of millet cultivation, its nutritional benefits, and various cultivation practices. She also introduced participants to different types of millets and demonstrated value-added millet products. The session concluded with a video presentation showcasing millet cultivation from land preparation to the creation of value-added products, followed by an interactive session with the trainees.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Kumari Pallavi, SMS (Home Science).
