KVK Peren conducts training on pineapple, papaya cultivation

KVK Peren conducted training on pineapple, papaya cultivation under TSP on August 4.

PEREN, AUGUST 6 (MExN): The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, conducted a one-day training programme on "Entrepreneurship Development of Tribal Farmers through Training and Demonstration of Pineapple and Papaya Fruits Cultivation" under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) on August 4 at the KVK office in Jalukie.

The programme was chaired by Dr Prashant Kalal, SMS (Fruit Science), KVK Peren, who also delivered the welcome address. The event was attended by farmers from various villages under Jalukie and Ahthibung blocks.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr K L Meena, Principal Scientist and Head, KVK Peren, encouraged farmers to adopt integrated and mixed farming systems for sustainable production and steady income generation.

Z. James Kikon, Chief Technical Officer (Soil Science), KVK Peren, spoke on improved cultivation practices and highlighted the scope and importance of fruit crops in the district.

The programme was graced by Dr Zieleigai Ndang, District Agriculture Officer (DAO), Peren, as the guest of honour. He urged farmers to adopt modern agricultural technologies and consider fruit cultivation as a viable enterprise. He also advised on off-season production to avoid market glut.

C. Dory Yanthan, District Forest Officer and Project Director, ATMA Peren, also attended as guest of honour. She encouraged the use of improved techniques and sustainable natural resource management to boost productivity.

A technical training session on pineapple and papaya cultivation was presented by Dr Prashant Kalal. He discussed eco-friendly management of viral diseases and insect pests in papaya and explained the use of plant hormones such as NAA and Ethrel for uniform flower induction in pineapple plantations.

As part of the programme, saplings of pineapple and papaya, along with neem oil, fungicides, spades and other inputs were distributed to 25 farmers from Jalukie and Ahthibung blocks.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Rokozeno Chalieu, Project Manager, FPO.
