Kohima, June 13 (MExN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Phek (ICAR–NRC on Mithun, Medziphema), under ICAR-ATARI Zone VII, Umiam, in collaboration with scientist of ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, line departments, and scientists from SAS, Medziphema concluded an intensive awareness campaign under the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan.

The campaign started from May 29 to June 12, covering 110 villages across the remote and ecologically sensitive districts of Phek and Meluri, reaching a total of 9300 farmers (5606 men and 3694 women).

Despite challenging terrain, poor road connectivity, and adverse weather due to early monsoon conditions, KVK Phek field teams, comprising agricultural scientists, technical staff, and extension functionaries embarked on rigorous outreach journeys.

They directly engaged with farming communities, delivering awareness programmes, farmer group discussions, and interactive sessions on principles and practices of natural farming, importance of traditional landraces and local crops for ecological sustainability, soil health management and use of bio-inputs, government schemes for farmer welfare and agri-development and value of indigenous knowledge systems in enhancing food and nutritional security.

The campaign emphasized the development of region-specific, culturally appropriate, and sustainable farming models, while also encouraging farmers to share local innovations, success stories, and agricultural challenges.

This two-way exchange fostered mutual learning and strengthened trust between scientists and the community.

Speaking on the success of the initiative, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Head of KVK Phek, stated “The overwhelming response from farmers, especially in such remote regions, speaks volumes about their readiness to adopt both traditional and scientifically validated practices. The campaign was more than just awareness—it became a platform for co-creating context-based, sustainable solutions for our agricultural challenges.”

Looking ahead, KVK Phek plans to expand its outreach to additional villages in the coming weeks. The focus will remain on deepening farmer engagement, encouraging youth involvement in agriculture, promoting women-led food systems, and strengthening ties between farmers, researchers, and government programs.

The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan has emerged as a vital step towards achieving a resilient, self-reliant, and sustainable agricultural future for the farming communities of Nagaland.
