In a bid to preserve and promote a local bird ‘Pezhie-ra,’ commonly known as the ‘Golden Throated Barbet,’ the Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) today announced the bird as the mascot of the forthcoming 63rd meet of Kohima Village Sport Association (KVSA.”
The meet is scheduled for January 13 to 19, 2018 at Kohima local ground. This will be the 74th annual KVSA sports meet.
For Kohima village, this is not only a sports meet but a festival for the village where every members and families come together in one platform and celebrate the festivities.
“Our forefathers have started this event since 1944 to let the village grow more closer and understand each other through sporting activities,” said KVYO president Medozhatuo Rutsa while addressing a press conference here today.
We are proud to announce that some of our youths from respective khel started their sporting activities from this village level event and carried forwards their activities even in national levels, he said.
Vitsu Yhome, member of the organising committee said the mascot draws inspiration from the local bird (Pezhie-ra) scientifically known as the golden throated barbet bird.
He said the bird still exists, especially during the plowing season, encouraging the male farmers to toil hard with its colourful feathers. He also informed that an individual able to hunt the bird and use its magnificent feathers as earrings are blessed with abundance and prosperity by the village elders.
Considering the grandeur of the bird, the mascot for 63rd KVSA meet has been christened as 'Kekuokeyho', which is translated is as “Mightier and Stronger.”
