Lachit Divas: NFR pays tribute to one of India’s ‘greatest’ army generals

Guwahati, November 24 (MExN):  Lachit Divas, the commemoration of the  400th birth anniversary of Commander-in-Chief of the Ahom Army, Bir Lachit Barphukan was observed in the North-East Frontier Railway (NFR) Headquarters and all the divisions from November 21-24. 

 

At NFR Headquarters in Maligaon, NFR General Manager Anshul Gupta led other officials in paying homage by lighting the lamp and offering floral tribute to the portrait of Barphukan during the observance. 

The officers, staffs of NFR, representatives of various Associations and Unions were also present at the event. 

Speaking on the occasion, Gupta shared on the Commander-in-Chief of the Ahom Army, Barphukan’s role in driving out the much larger and better-equipped Mughal forces from Assam and noted that the North-East India remaining free from Mughal subjugation due to his gallantry. 

 

An exhibition on the life history and heroic deeds of Barphukan was also displayed at Dr Bhupen Hazarika Sabha Griha in NFR Headquarters complex, a press release informed. 

All the divisions of NFR also marked the occasion by lighting the lamp and offering floral tribute, while members of Bharat Scouts and Guides, NFR also performed skit by displaying the gallantry during the Battle of Saraighat.

A sand painting exhibition was also created by sand artist Robin Bar to portray the biography of Barphukan and Prabhat pheri, essay, drawing and painting competitions were held across Railway schools over NFR.

As per the release from NFR CPRO, Barphukan was a great military leader and an exemplary figure of Assamese society. He is best known for leading the Ahom kingdom’s forces to victory against the invading Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671.
