
Chümoukedima, June 8 (MExN): The Department of Agriculture celebrated World Environment Day on the theme “land restoration, desertification and drought resilience plantation drive” at Agri Expo Chümoukedima on June 5.
C Peter Yanthan, Addl Director, Department of Agriculture in his welcome address, expounded the major role played by the environment in human health, impacting the society and economy. Putting effort into planting today will aid the future generation, he said.
In his address, Mhathung Yanthan, Advisor, Department of Agriculture stressed on land restoration as a key pillar for the protection and revival of ecosystem and stated that our land is under increasing pressure from deforestation, land degradation and urbanisation. He encouraged the participants to involve and empower younger generation in environmental initiatives to foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the planet. In order to sustain agriculture-ecological balance and natural resources should be protected and taken care.
He advised the participant to adapt accordingly to changing climate pattern by accommodating the local weather conditions. He concluded his speech with the quote “Act Locally, Think Globally”.
The participants carried out plantation drive in the vicinity. Altogether 86 participants including officials from various district attended the programme.
