Kohima | July 18

The aggrieved landowners affected by the Kohima-Jessami 2-lane road construction project have temporarily relaxed the total blockade on National Highway 29, allowing the movement of vehicles in the interest of public convenience. This development comes following the intervention of the Deputy Commissioner of Phek, the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), and the Chakhesang Mothers' Association (CMA).

In a statement issued on July 18, the landowners stated, “As a gesture of goodwill towards commuters and the local community, the landowners have allowed the passage of vehicles on the affected stretch of the highway.”

However, they clarified that while the public may use the highway, all activities and works related to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) will remain blocked. The landowners said this will continue “until a positive solution is achieved in the ongoing compensation dispute.”

“The landowners emphasize the necessity of addressing the unresolved compensation issues before allowing any further progress on the project,” the statement added.

Reiterating their commitment to peaceful protests, the landowners said the temporary lifting of the blockade demonstrates their consideration for the welfare of the community. “While the general public can now travel along National Highway 29, the landowners stand firm in their demand for fair and timely compensation for the damages inflicted on their properties,” they stated.

They also expressed appreciation to the Deputy Commissioner of Phek for facilitating discussions and appealed to all stakeholders to engage constructively towards a “mutually satisfactory resolution.”

The landowners asserted that they remain “dedicated to advocating for their rights and ensuring that justice prevails in the compensation matter.”
