Mokokchung | September 15

A devastating landslide struck Aongza Ward, Mokokchung District, on the evening of September 14, destroying a house and leaving a family of eight displaced.

According to the house owner, Ayutemjen Kichu of Chungtia Village, the incident occurred around 8:00 PM. The family first heard unusual sounds and went to inspect. “Within two minutes the house was taken away. Our lives were saved by just two minutes,” he recounted.

The landslide completely swept away the entire downstairs area, including the kitchen, and left visible cracks in the remaining structure, forcing the family to fully evacuate. Having lived in the house for nine years, Ayutemjen and his family are now taking shelter at a neighbor’s residence while searching for a rented house.

The house, identified as House No. 290, had five rooms and two kitchens. No belongings could be salvaged during the incident, and the total loss—including property, commodities, and cash—has been estimated between Rs 8–10 lakhs, excluding the cost of constructing a retaining wall.

So far, the family has not received any government assistance. Neithozo, NCS, EAC (HQ), inspected the disaster-affected site and advised the family to apply for the State Disaster Relief Fund at the Administration office.

Meanwhile, Imtiyapang, MMC Councillor, Aongza Ward, appealed to the district administration and the State Disaster Management Authority to provide immediate relief to the affected family. He also urged the community to extend help: “We urge the community to come forward and support our brothers and sisters in this difficult time.”
