Kiphire | May 7

The citizens of Langzanger village in Kiphire have affirmed to uphold Clean Election keeping in mind the call of the NBCC and also the need for the citizens to choose right leader for progress and development, and to practice real democracy by exercising one’s franchise. The resolution was made during the citizens’ meet held from May 5-6 in the village under the theme ‘Building a sustainable future; a shared responsibility’.

Speaking on the theme, Ben Longkumer, SP Kiphire asked the citizens present to live an exemplary life if a sustainable future is to become a reality. “A future which is sustainable is not built overnight, but it is a process where each and every citizen should play constructive roles by taking up responsibilities,” he stated.

Pointing out the need for electoral reforms, Longkumer further questioned, “Why do you blame our leaders for not developing the state; we should blame ourselves first because we take money, sell our votes…”

To see a future which is sustainable, he asserted, one has to start today and meeting like this is the right platform where thinking process for solution can take place.

Lauding the effort of the village to keep the village environment clean, Longkumer also said keeping one’s environment clean is not others’ responsibility. “Each individual is responsible and in this way we are contributing to the progress of the village in very big way.”

Meanwhile, he wondered whether the present officers and graduates the village has produced so far are enough for the village and advised the village to produce more officers and responsible citizens so that the responsibilities can be shared.

Maintaining that tribalism is killing the Nagas and Kiphire district is no exception, he further asked the Langzanger citizens to shy away from tribalism and have ‘we’ attitude rather than “I’ attitude. Towards this, he added level of understanding and spirit of forgive and be forgiven should be there.

Dr. Tsipongchem, Pathologist DHK, who took workshop session on “Health”, dealt on various aspects of healthy life. Keeping oneself clean is the solution to many sicknesses and diseases, he added. He also covered mental, physical and social aspects of health and asked the citizens to give priority to health care, adding if one has positive attitude ‘illness’ can become ‘wellness’. He also distributed medicine and checked few patients in the village.

Ashmin Gaur, Sub-Editor for The Indian Express, who took a session on ‘women empowerment’, said God created male and female equal and if one respects God they should also respect women. She also appealed to the male folks present to give more respect to women and let their voice be heard in all developmental activities. Women, she added, should be given freedom to choose and take decision as male does because as Sikh religion says, “Kings and leader are born through women.”

The citizens’ meet adopted 12-point resolution, which comprises of both short and long term programmes.
