Dimapur, August 26 (MExN): Police in Dimapur have seized 19,760 bottles of suspected codeine-based cough syrup from a warehouse in Marwari Patti, Dimapur police official said on Wednesday, as part of the Nagaland government’s ongoing “War on Drugs” campaign.
The raid was carried out on Tuesday evening by a team from the Sub-Urban Police Station under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, at a godown located at House No. 23-B, Jain Temple Road, Marwari Patti, based on credible ground intelligence, Dy Commissioner of Police (Crime)/PRO, Dimapur said in a release.
The tenant of the premises failed to appear despite repeated calls, following which the Assistant Commissioner of Police (West) authorised and supervised the opening of the locked godown, police said. The search was conducted in the presence of independent local witnesses and digitally documented through the e-Sakshya platform to ensure transparency, police added.
A total of 126 cartons containing 19,760 bottles of cough syrup were recovered, comprising 101 cartons of Bescod Cough Syrup (16,160 bottles) and 25 cartons of EB-DYL Cough Syrup (3,600 bottles), according to police. “Several other unaccounted pharmaceuticals were also taken into safe custody for verification,” police said.
A suo motu case has been registered at Sub-Urban Police Station under Section 21(C) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and an investigation is underway to identify the warehouse operators and track the supply chain, police said.
Dimapur Police appealed to the general public and civil society organisations to share information regarding the sale of any narcotic drugs with the nearest police station, assuring that the identity of informants would be kept confidential.
