With speculation rife over the prevailing political situation in Nagaland and despite deferring a decision on the demand for President’s Rule, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has recently spoken out on the law and order situation in Nagaland describing it as ‘vulnerable’. Speaking during the recently concluded Chief Ministers’ Conference on Internal Security, the Prime Minister while pointing out to the improvement in the overall law and order situation in the other Northeastern States had said that Manipur and Nagaland appeared particularly vulnerable. The Prime Minister even referred to the problem of ‘extortion,’ which he said “seems to be a frequent occurrence”.
“We need to put an end to this. We need to enforce the rule of law and create a respect for the State apparatus. We need much better leadership at all levels so that militancy is curbed and people feel secure. National considerations and requirements should take over-riding priority”, the Prime Minister said as per the speech delivered during the conference on internal security, made available to the press.
