Longleng, March 24 (MExN): Longleng District Legal Services Authority (LDLSA) organized a legal awareness program on March 23 at Customary Court here.
Speaking on Nagaland Village Council Act, 1978, Hamnyei Angh, Panel Lawyer LDLSA apprised that the village council has the power and duties to formulate development schemes, supervise proper maintenance of water supply, roads, power, forest, education and other welfare activities.
He also said the village council will help various government agencies in carrying out development works in the village and take up development works on its own initiative or on request by the government.
The village council constituted under the law in force from time to time, Hamnyei further informed, will administer justice within the village limits in accordance with the customary law and usages as accepted by the cannons of justice established in Nagaland and the law in this respect as enforced from time to time, stated a press release.
On village administration, he informed that the village council will be auxiliary to the administration and shall have full power to deal with internal administration of the village such as maintenance of law and order etc.
Speaking on the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987, Monnyei, Panel Lawyer LDLSA said the Act meets the objectives of Article 39A of the Constitution of India. The state is required to “secure that the operation of the legal system promotes free legal aid, by suitable legislations or schemes nor denied to anyone by reason of economic or other disabilities,” she added.
She further mentioned that the functions of the Legal Services Authority is to provide free legal aid, establish Legal Aid Clinic, conduct Lok Adalat, legal awareness programs, Para-Legal Volunteer scheme etc.
