The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) in association with National Commission for Women, New Delhi organized a legal awareness programme on human trafficking at Town Hall, Mokokchung.

The awareness programme is a part of the NSCW campaign on child and human trafficking which started on March 21 and will continue till May 31 covering all district headquarters and one sub-division each of all the districts in the state.

Dr. Temsula Ao, Chairperson NSCW while giving the introductory speech said that human trafficking is a global menace and that it affects not only the poor nations but also the more affluent ones too. She briefed the audience on the concept of human trafficking including the measures to combat human trafficking.

She said that human trafficking is happening in our state too and that this menace is threatening our youth insidiously and silently. Taking the example of the Nagas importing domestic help from neighbouring states and villages, Temsula Ao said that we are not only the victims but we also become the perpetrators through greed, lack of human concern for others and ignorance.

She added that the dislocation of children is also a type of human trafficking and violation of human rights in the guise of charitable activities, committed either by individuals, families or social groups.

Temsula Ao concluded by saying, “it is time for all of us, society, administration, police, NGOs and churches to be aware of these threats and work together to save our future generation from the menace called Human Trafficking”.

Short speeches were given by Yanrenthung Ngullie, Addl. SP, Mokokchung and Esther K. Aye, State Trainer & Legal Aid Counsel, NSLSA, where she talked about the legal provisions and perspectives on human trafficking.

The summing up of the programme was given by Asangla Cholong, member NSCW, where she concluded by saying that the NCSW has taken up the initiative to create and spread awareness regarding child and human trafficking throughout the state with the hope that the local bodies, organisations, administration, GBs, DBs and individuals alike will stand up against the evils of human trafficking in the state.
