Legal awareness programme held in Aghunato

Zunheboto, June 5 (DIPR): In order to impart legal education, a legal awareness and sensitization programme was held in Aghunato town on June 3, organized by Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority.

Public Prosecutor Zunheboto, Khetoholi Yepthomi who was the resource person, spoke on the topic – ‘Juvenile Justice Act, 2 015’. She stated that the Act was adopted by the government keeping in view the child's right to survival, development, protection and the right to participation. "Moreover, the same 'Act' is to adjudicate the juvenile in a friendly approach by way of counselling, so that the child involved in the criminal offence such as theft, rape and murder etc. could reform themselves.

The provision of this 'Act' attends to the child in need of care and protection," Yepthomi added.

Resource person Esther H. Yepthomi, Panel Lawyer ZDLSA, highlighted that any person involved in sexual offences in any form or kind shall be held punishable by law under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 (POCSO).

The definition of this law is so strong that a person could be held guilty and sentenced to jail for passing sexually offensive remarks, making gestures with wrongful intention, Yepthomi said.
