
Dimapur, July 21 (MExN): Legal Literacy & Awareness at Alder College Kohima programme was held at Alder College Kohima on July 20. Kezhokhoto Savi, consumer activist, president of NVCO and Rotary Club Kohima was the main speaker for the campaign. The campaign was conducted by Kohima Law College is in collaboration with Nagaland Legal Services Authority and NVCO. Principal of Alder College expressed privilege to have legal expert to speak to the students. Study materials printed and published by Nagaland Legal Services Authority were also distributed to all the students attending the programme.
A press note issued by Kezhokhoto Savi, President NVCO stated that the main speaker in his speech appealed to the state government that ‘Consumers are to be protected.’ He expounded on the term ‘consumer’ and stated that a consumer is a person who uses goods and services for a consideration of prices. “Except the gift of nature such as air, sunlight and rain, we buy all the goods and services to meet our day to day life. Hence, we are all consumers, whether we buy food or clothes, books or stationery, travel by bus or train, consume electricity or water, availing the service of a doctor, open or operate a bank account or hire a locker,” he said.
He also said that common problem faced by the consumers are: defective goods, deficiency services, expiry goods, removal of original price tag, hazardous products in the market, poor quality, high price and no uniformity in prices, faulty weighing scale, adulteration, black marketing etc. Therefore, every one of us as a consumer should be vigilant while buying goods and availing services. Proper care should be taken to check weight, read and understand the information provided on the goods. Check the prices and obtain cash memo/receipt. Check the date of manufacture, date of expiry, quality and quantity, ISI mark, AGMARK, MRP, etc.
The note further mentioned that other speakers for the campaign were Chumben, Moyung, Rabemo, Mhabeni and Tuden, who dwelt on the topic- FIR, Juvenile Justice, Cyber Crime, Legal Services Authority & free legal aid to poor & Motor Accidental Claim Tribunal, respectively.
