Legal literacy and sensitization at Yongshei

Longleng, October 8 (MExN): Longleng District Legal Services Authority (LDLSA) organised a legal literacy and sensitization programme on various flagship programmes and schemes of National Legal Services Authority at Yongshei village in Longleng district on October 6.  

Attended by the village youth, women group, and students, Victo Sema, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary of LDLSA commenced the programme with introduction of Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012 framed by the State Government for providing relief funds as a means of compensation to the victims or victim’s dependents who have suffered loss or injury as a result of crime and who is entitled and requiring rehabilitation.  

Victo also spoke on the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), which is a Government of India scheme implemented to provide financial assistance to the elderly, widows and persons with disabilities in the form of social pensions. There are five schemes launched under the NSAP – Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme, National Family Benefit Scheme, Annapurna Scheme.  

Abraham, Assistant Public Prosecutor, Longleng briefed on the provisions of Motor Vehicle Act 1988 (MV Act), pointing out the salient features and nature of offences, penalties, licensing, registration and insurance. Abraham also highlighted the various legal aspects of cyber crimes and law.  

Protection and Enforcement of Tribal Rights Scheme, 2015 of National Legal Services Authority was presented by Joseph, Panel lawyer, LDLSA. Joseph stated that the scheme is meant for the tribal people throughout India with an aim to improve and ensure access to justice for the tribal people of India. He further illustrated various connotations of the Scheme such as access to rights, benefits, legal aid, other legal services provided by the Legal Services Authority in the State.  

Hamnyei Angh, Panel Lawyer of LDLSA spoke on the topic ‘Legal Services to the Mentally Ill and Mentally Disabled Persons) Scheme, 2015’. The scheme targets persons with disabilities, especially those suffering from mental illness and mental retardation to ensure effective access to justice and legal service for such persons on the basis of equal recognition and equal protection before the law, he added. Further, Angh urged the villagers to treat the mentally ill or mentally disabled as individuals who are to be helped to enforce all rights they are entitled to and as assured to them by law.
