The Kiphire District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) has set up Legal Literacy Clubs in five schools of the district. On the inauguration day of the clubs, the schools were handed over computer set by the judge of Guwahati High Court, Justice Michael Zothankhuma in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner here on February 17.
Addressing the students, Justice Michael said knowledge is a very powerful weapon and asked the students to use it for right purpose. “If you make good use of the knowledge you acquire you can help the society and the people who are in need,” he exhorted.
Justice Michael also told the students to know the fundamental rights contained in the constitution, adding “if you do not know your right you will feel hesitant in life and will not be able to move forward confidently.”
Stressing on the importance of legal rights, he further said, “You are lucky to have this program in the district and in your schools because many do not get the opportunity.” With this kind of program, he said, they will know their rights.
Meanwhile, Y Longkumer, Registrar, Guwahati High Court appealed to the students to grab the opportunity and also advised the students to read more books. Longkumer assured that the panel lawyers will be there to extend help at any time and appealed to the students to make use of the opportunity.
District Education Officer D. Panda, who also spoke on the occasion, appreciated the District Legal Services Authority for conducting awareness programmes, establishing legal clubs and also for various activities on legal related activities in the district.
Meanwhile, Mezivolu T. Therieh, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary, Kiphire DLSA highlighted that the problem in the district is lack of awareness on legal matters and expressed hope that the student’s community will take forward the legal services’ vision to the community and society.
She informed that Para Legal Volunteers and panel lawyers will go to the schools where the legal literacy clubs have been set up and will interact and conduct seminars with the students.
Mezivolu also expressed gratitude to Justice Michael Zothankhuma for taking the trouble of travelling such a long distance to meet the students and inaugurate the legal literacy clubs in the district. Sentila Aier, APP & Ex. Member, DLSA Kiphire acknowledged the visiting officials.
The Legal Literacy Clubs have been opened in the following five schools – Government Higher Secondary School Kiphire, Agape School, Saramati School, Christian High School Pungro, and Government Higher Secondary School Pungro.
