Legal Metrology Act to replace weights & measures

Kohima, January 7 (MExN): The Legal Metrology Act 2009 (No.1 of 2010) was notified on January 14, 2010 in the official gazette of Government of India which will replace the standards of weights and measures Act, 1976 and the standards of weights and measures (enforcement) Act, 1985 after its implementation.
The draft model legal metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2010 has already been circulated to all states/UTs in September 2010 to frame their own legal metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2010. This draft rule is only for the guidance. This was stated in a letter addressed to the principal secretary, incharge of legal metrology department of all the states and union territories by B.N. Dixit, Director (Legal Metrology), New Delhi.
It is decided that the Legal Metrology Act 2009 and Rules made there under are brought into force w.e.f March 1, 2011. The secretary, D/o Consumer Affairs will have a video conference with the principal secretary /incharge of legal metrology departments of states/UTs on January 10. As per the scheduled, video conference in respect of Nagaland state will take place at 3:30 to 4:30 PM.
