Legislators’ role in peace under question

Kohima | September 6

Lackadaisical role of state legislators in peace building has came under the attack from church leaders as Nagas commemorate the signing of first Indo-Naga ceasefire of 1964 today. Prominent church leader Rev Dr VK Nuh, while addressing a gathering organized by Nagaland Peace Centre at Kohima today, questioned the contribution of 60 Nagaland legislators in the Nagas’ long quest for peace.

“Out of 60 MLAs, who shed tears for peace? Do they have a feeling for peace”, Nuh lashed out at the legislators. This criticism came in at a time when both the ruling DAN government and opposition Congress are making tall claims of them contributing towards bringing peace in state, especially amongst the different warring underground factions. The Reverend said that many organizations talks of peace, but has failed. Moreover, the underground groups have also failed to understand the approach of the pacifists.

“They (UGs) thought what they do are the right way. We failed to convince them. What can we do now?” Dr Nuh said, sounding helpless and remorseful. “God will not send us back to Egypt, we have to conquer Jericho, we have to cross Jordan”, Nuh went on, adding that God has led the Nagas to this far in their long struggle for freedom and can not relent now anymore. But freedom will come only when Nagas are ready to preserve, protect and defend. Disobedience to God will fail the Naga people, Nuh added.

At a simple, but solemn function, which was attended by NPC members, many members who spoke recounted the joyful moment on the mid-night of September 6, 1964, when the first ceasefire was declared between the NNC and the government of India amidst turmoil in Nagaland. The day was also marked by responsive reading of the Scriptures. N Theyo, NPC chairman, chaired the function.
