Kohima, May 19 (MExN): Under the patronage of the Department of Land Resources Development, Kiphire, Nagaland, a Lemon Grass Distillation Unit was inaugurated at Sanphore Village on May 10 by C Kipili Sangtam, Parliamentary Secretary for Land Resources Development, Nagaland.
Delivering the keynote address, Hekato N, District Project Officer, Land Resources Development, Kiphire said that his department felt the need of encouraging farmers to indulge in other farming activities apart from the usual agricultural and related activities. This led to the introduction of lemon grass plantation in the district. Seeing the success of the plantation, the department has installed the Distillation Unit. He stressed that one litre of distilled lemongrass would fetch about Rs. 3000 in the market, which would be a great boost to the economy of the people. Lemongrass is an ingredient in many products such as perfumes, soaps, household products, etc.
C Kipili Sangtam stressed need for the promotion of rural resources in the district and the need for farmers to venture into new areas of agriculture and plantation, which will not only bring about economic development but also open up ways for the district to come at par with the progress and development in the economy of the other districts in the state.
In continuation with this inauguration, a team of ten farmers, five each from Sanphore Village and Kiphire Village, who are the main beneficiaries of the lemon grass plantation in Kiphire District, were given a comprehensive introduction and training on lemongrass plantation and distillation by giving them the opportunity to visit Bito Nursery, Dimapur, Nagaland and Land Resources Research Farm.
