DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 27 (MExN): A leopard which had been killing livestock and posing a threat to people at Purana Bazar B and surrounding villages was captured today and safely relocated.
A press release from the Dimapur Wildlife Warden, Tokaho H Kinimi informed that the leopard was captured and relocated on September 27. Reports had surfaced on September 17 of two goats being killed at a private farm in Purana Bazar-B along with detection of pug marks.
“Investigation, monitoring and surveillance via trail cameras was followed upon by the Wildlife Wing along with the assistance of Village Council members and GB of Purana Bazar-B. Based on specific inputs of sporadic and continual loss of grazing livestock on village lands and its proximity to urban human habitation, the call was taken to trap and relocate the animal,” the press release informed. Surveillance over the period showed a lone adult male leopard in the area.
“Hence it may now be safely concluded that the vicinity is free from any leopard menace,” it added. The Wildlife Warden meanwhile thanked the GBs, Village Council members and volunteers from Purana Bazar-B and the surrounding villages for assistance rendered towards conservation and for heeding to the department’s advisory.
