Lerie Council Kohima bans sale of IMFL, tightens restrictions on shops, labourers

KOHIMA, NOVEMBER 29 (MExN): The Lerie Council, along with GBs, the Judiciary Board, Youth Organisation and Women Organisation, has announced a series of regulatory measures for Lerie Colony following a meeting held on November 24.

According to a release issued by Council chairman Kevilezo and secretary Sukho Movi, no party or vehicle will be allowed to enter public places in Lerie for entertainment after 7 pm. Violators will be fined Rs 1,000, and their names may be published in local newspapers, it said.

The Council further resolved that shops operating from shared living–shop spaces shall not entertain customers on Sundays. All shops in Lerie Colony, including barber shops, medical stores and bakeries, will also remain closed on Sundays. Defaulters will be fined Rs 5,000 with effect from January 2026, it added.

The Youth Organisation has been authorised to check shops for expired goods and overcharging above the MRP, and to penalise violators accordingly.

Reiterating its earlier decision, the Council said the ban on IMFL and all other liquor within Lerie Colony remains in force “irrespective of State relaxations.” The Women Organisation will monitor compliance, it added.

On regulating the residence of labourers, business personnel and alleged illegal immigrants, the Council reaffirmed an earlier resolution restricting the stay of certain individuals within the colony. It said the measure has been taken to maintain harmony “based on past incidents.” Both house owners and the individuals in question will be held responsible in case of violations.

“Violation of this resolution will be at the risk of the house owner and the Muslim settlers. The Lerie Council will not be responsible for any untoward incidents,” it stated, adding that the resolution is “not intended to discriminate or humiliate any particular community but to ensure congenial coexistence” in view of previous incidents involving labourers.
