Livingstone Foundation International College Department of English commemorated World Mother Day on February 21.

Dimapur, February 22 (MExN): Livingstone Foundation International (LFI) College Department of English commemorated World Mother Day to foster the crux of preserving one’s own Mother tongue on February 21.
A press release received here stated that the chief speaker, Jemsungba Walling, HoD Department of English stressed on importance of individuals in preserving one’s mother tongue. He emphasised the current situation of many North East Indian languages being at risk of becoming critically endangered due to a lack of proper documentation and the laidback nature of native speakers, who fail to recognise that language entails one's identity and cultural affiliation, which have been passed down through generations and losing them would mean the end of a person's root.
He commended the crucial initiatives by the Government of India, such as SPPEL (Scheme for Protection and Preservation of Indigenous Languages), and appreciated the masterstroke of NEP 2020 in fostering multilingualism among the young minds of the future.
He encouraged the students to preserve and promote the language by cultivating the habit of documenting one’s local folktales/folklore and to encourage using one’s mother tongue.
During the event, K Dantsula Yimchunger, BA, 4th semester, winner for the story writing (folktale) competition was felicitated. A special folk song was performed by the BA 4th semester students (Department of English LFIC), and Kiyekali H Yepthomi delivered the vote of thanks.
