‘Liberal education offers students a career path beyond civil services’

Ashoka University’s Territory Manager for the Northeast, Imnajungla Jamir addresses students in Mokokchung.

MOKOKCHUNG, JULY 20 (MExN): In a bid to introduce students of Nagaland to new-age educational possibilities, Ashoka University’s Territory Manager for the Northeast, Imnajungla Jamir, is currently conducting a series of interactive sessions in Mokokchung.

Liberal education is a broad-based, interdisciplinary approach to learning that focuses on developing critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, and ethical reasoning skills—rather than just preparing students for a specific job or profession.

Aimed at students of Classes 11 and 12, the outreach has so far covered institutions such as Mayangnokcha Higher Secondary School, Jubilee Memorial School, N.I. Jamir Higher Secondary School, and Senayangba Higher Secondary School.

The sessions are part of Ashoka University’s initiative to promote liberal education as a transformative approach, particularly relevant in the context of the Northeast.

Traditionally, youth in the region have aspired to join the civil services, a career path held in high esteem. However, with limited seats and intense competition, many aspirants find themselves disillusioned and unemployed, despite academic qualifications.

Highlighting this challenge, Jamir said liberal education offers a solution that complements the civil service dream while equipping students with a wider skillset to navigate today’s dynamic job market.

Ashoka University, located in Sonipat, Haryana, is India’s largest philanthropic educational initiative. With a vision to offer an education on par with global institutions such as Harvard and Stanford, Ashoka focuses on liberal arts and sciences, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability among its students.

“Liberal education does not aim to replace civil services as a career aspiration—it strengthens it,” said Jamir. She explained that the interdisciplinary nature of liberal arts enables students to gain in-depth knowledge of subjects like history, sociology, and governance, while also opening doors to diverse career opportunities in policy, media, research, entrepreneurship, and beyond.

A key highlight of Ashoka’s programme is its scholarship model, which ensures that deserving students from underrepresented and remote regions such as the Northeast have access to world-class education.

The message, she said, is clear: liberal education is not just an alternative, but a necessary evolution in the way students from the Northeast can envision their futures.
