‘Life below water: For people & planet’

Wildlife Division, Dimapur observes World Wildlife Day
Dimapur, March 3 (MExN): Wildlife Division, Dimapur observed World Wildlife Day at Zukihe village, Dimapur on March 3. The celebration was participated by students and teachers of Zukihe GMS, GBs, and members of village council, officials and staffs from Wildlife Division, Dimapur.
Speaking on the theme ‘Life below water: For people and planet’, Tokaho H Kinimi, IFS, Wildlife Warden, Dimapur called for taking steps to keep the water bodies unpolluted.
He said that several household items we use in our daily life such as, detergents, paints, pesticides and plastic wastes etc. when released into water bodies ‘causes’ pollution disrupting and affecting the aquatic species. He appealed the participants for safe disposal of household cleaners to keep the water bodies free from pollution.
Discussions were also held with the GBs and village council where the problems caused by wild elephant were highlighted. It was alleged that elephants cross over from Dhansiri river to their village and destroyed their crops and properties from time to time.
The village council also handed over a copy of council’s resolution dated January 15 and informed that all forms of hunting and fishing have been banned within their village jurisdictions and defaulters will be penalised with a fine of Rs.2500.
As part of the celebrations, drawing and essay competitions were held where more than 30 students participated. Sheron bagged the first prize in drawing competition, the second and third prize were won by Hinoka and Chande Ali respectively.
In the essay competition, the first prize was bagged by Hoikali, Subash and Tolika won the second and third prize respectively. The programme was followed by exposure trip where the young students were taken to Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangaphar. Earlier a “Pledge” to be responsible and protect wildlife was signed by the participants.
