‘Limestone from Nagaland of highest-grade’

Kohima, January 4: Lime stones available in Nagaland are of the highest grade, according to a report by the Nagaland State Mineral Development Corporation Limited (A Government of Nagaland undertaking). The annual progress report (2012-2013) informs that lime stones from Nagaland posses a Ca0 content of 54% (The highest possible percentage being 56%).

The report adds that the limestone from the state is highly crystalline, very hard, having beautiful texture and variable colours from grey to dark grey, takes good polishing and can be used as marble.

It is also used as the main raw material for the cement plant and can also be used as a flux in blast furnace.

The report informed that the NSMDC has proposed to take up a new limestone mine to meet the requirement of the existing Decorative & Dimensional Stone Plants at Wazeho (Phek district) and at Chumukedima (Dimapur district).

The requirement of limestone for the Tuli Paper Mill (42,000 Metric Tonne annually) can also be made available from this mine, according to the report.

Preparation of a Detailed Project Report for an export oriented Mega Cement Plant and other limestone based industries are also being taken up. NSMDC is co-ordinating with various departments in the process of infrastructural development. This is to facilitate private companies in setting up Limestone based industries in the Nagaland state, as per the report.

It further informed that the requirement of Lime for the Tuli Paper Mill alone is 110 Metric tonne daily. In order to meet this requirement (initially), the report proposed the setting up of a Lime Burning Plant near the source of the limestone.
