Liquor, expired goods seized and destroyed in Diphupar

Dimapur, June 18 (MExN): A cache of liquor worth around Rs. 2.5 lakhs and expired goods worth Rs. 10,000 were destroyed at Diphupar village on June 18.

The exercise was part of an ongoing drive against liquor initiated by the Diphupar Naga Women Organisation (DNWO) along with Diphupar Naga Youth Organization (DNYO).

A brief programme was held before the destruction of the items, where DNWO chairperson Ajano Lotha informed that the liquor was confiscated within the village jurisdiction from 26 outlets fronting as legitimate businesses from April 25 to June 15 this year.

The objective of the drive, she said, is to rid the village of the “menace” of liquor consumption. She asserted that DNWO will continue to keep an eye on the mushrooming of illicit liquor outlets within the village, a press release informed.

Ajano further called upon the various organisations of Diphupar to extend support and cooperation to rid the village of “menace of liquor consumption and expired goods.”

DNYO president Kikheto Sumi meanwhile asserted that the organization with the help and support of council and women organization has been trying its best to suppress “anti-social activities” within the vicinity. He lauded DNWO for the commendable job.

It was informed that DNYO took the initiative to seize expired items from shops with concern for the customers and to prevent health hazard. Of all the items seized, tobacco products were seized from the vicinity of Referral Hospital and school surroundings, Kikheto said.

Meanwhile, Diphupar Head GB Khekwetsu lauded DNWO for their achievements and the bold step they had taken to eradicate the sale and use of illegal liquor in line with NLTP Act 1989 and DNYO for their initiative.

He informed that the organizations have been continuously trying to seize intoxicating items within the village for the betterment of the society. Over the years, women organizations have been working towards prohibition of liquor, supporting the declaration of NBCC to make Nagaland a dry state, yet the situation has worsened presently, he lamented.

He called upon the tribal council, GBs, committees and other organizations to continue to extend their support and cooperation in the endeavour to eradicate such “menace” in the society and work together towards peaceful existence.

The seized items were destroyed at the premises of Diphupar Village Council hall.
