With the aim to act as a platform and to promote writers of Nagaland, a Literature Fest was held for the first time at the annual Hornbill Festival. The festival was initiated by the Nagaland Art and Culture Department and supported by Sahitya Academy, held at the Kisama Bamboo Heritage Hall this afternoon which led to an interaction of literary giants of Nagaland and young writers, editors, publishers and poets.
The chief guest Minister for Higher Education & Urban Development Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu released three books on “Forest Fire” authored by Easterine Kire”, “Birds of Nagaland” by Department of Art & Culture and a comic book titled “Shadows” by Design Stash.
Dr. Shurhozelie stated that the literature festival would add flavor to the ongoing festival, and expressed joy at seeing many writers coming up in Nagaland. He also acknowledged prolific writers like Easterine Kire and Prof. Temsula Ao, for being an inspiration for many upcoming writers, as many poems, collection of stories and other books are seen being released.
The minister urged the people to inculcate the habit of reading to lead to the growth of literature.
Dr. Shurhozelie also commented that the books, “Birds of Nagaland”, and “A companion to the birds of Nagaland” have dispelled popular belief that Nagaland is bereft of birds. “The situation is the complete opposite,” he stated adding that the surveys conducted in Nagaland have taken everyone by surprise. Furthermore, he asserted that the books will be distributed to school children across the State with the hope that they realize the significance of the rich bird life in Nagaland.
“Forest Song”, authored by Easterine Kire is the second instance of an artistic visualization of the Barkweaver stories in collaboration with Ura Academy and Barkweaver. “Birds of Nagaland” and “A Companion to the Birds of Nagaland” published by the directorate of tourism covers over 335 species and sub-species of birds in Nagaland and contains over 360 full color photographs. ‘Shadows” by Design Stash is a comic book by illustrator Akanito Assumi.
At the programme, eminent writer Easterine Kire held a book reading and comments were also made by eminent writers including Prof. Temsula Ao.
