Parliamentary Secretary for Municipal Affairs and Economics & Statistics, R. Tohanba today said that literacy without skill development is incomplete.
Addressing the 26th Yimchungrü Students’ Union Kohima (YSUK) general session cum freshers meet at State Academy Hall here, Tohanba said, “Attaining education without skill and extracurricular activities will be of no help in this era of competitive world.”
Maintaining that there is no shortcut to success, he called upon the students’ community to be disciplined and divide their time equally for studies and also to enhance one’s skill.
Quoting Bible verse Proverbs 1:7, he said as students they need to uphold God and seek His blessing to have knowledge. He also said that education should bring the best in the one’s body, mind and spirit.
He also called upon them not be influenced towards anti-social activities and unwanted elements but to concentrate in their studies, thereby upholding the ethical and moral values.
Meanwhile, pointing out that education had reached Yimchungrü area by mid-1940s, he however lamented that because of the Naga nationalist struggle they were unable to pursue proper education and remained in backwardness.
Nonetheless, Tohanba maintained that presently education has reached the doorsteps of the people and they should take advantage and attain quality education and convert quantity into quality so as to uplift the condition of the Yimchungrü.
He also challenged the younger generation to prepare well and struggle hard to achieve success in competitive exams.
Tohanba also called upon the youngsters to first propagate unity and oneness within the community which, he opined, will help in maintaining peace and tranquility with other communities.
Tohanba also released the new constitution of YSUK, presented before the house by Convener of Drafting Committee Kiutsüthong.
Speaking as the guest of honour, President of Yimchungrü Gazetted Officers Association, Dr. Pünsokiu called upon the students to be self-confident and believe in oneself to be successful. He also said that students have to be focused in their goal and put sincere hard-work to achieve it.
President of Yimchungrü Union Kohima, Kejingkhum and founder president of YSUK Akum also exhorted the gathering.
The programme commenced with Youth Pastor of Yimchungrü Baptist Church Kohima (YBBK) Aroba saying the invocation. YSUK president Ason Kips delivered the welcome address, Rünshito delivered speech on behalf of freshers, special prayer for the freshers was offered by YBBK Pastor Longri Nungti, special numbers were presented by YBBK Youth Department and Model Christian College, YSUK general secretary Andrew tendered the vote of thanks while YBBK Women Pastor Yinsola pronounced benediction.
