Environmentally Conscious Children’s Organisation joins cleanliness drive in Kohima
Kohima, February 29 (MExN): 12-year old Jentina Yaomei Shangkhu, founder of Environmentally Conscious Children’s Organisation (ECCO) along with her friends joined the Green Team volunteers in Kohima to clean up the city on February 29. Jentina say, “Little efforts will lead to big change.”
In the effort towards keeping Kohima clean, ECCO, sociology students of St Joseph College, Jakhama and the Green Team Kohima joined with Kohima Smart City and Kohima Municipal Council during the cleanliness drive along the National Highway Stretch from Classic Junction to TCP Gate Junction.
The volunteers picked up litter along the sidewalks and drains. The volunteers and students reported of drains filled with 1 Litre mineral water bottles and garbage and opined that citizens should find dustbins to throw waste and not clog the drains. “While the newly paved roads look very clean, the volunteers said that the drains and areas below the sidewalks are full of litter,” Kovi Meyase, CEO, Kohima Smart City Development Limited stated in a press release.
Apart from the mineral water bottles, 70% of the litter collected had tobacco wrappers which are a matter of concern and perhaps need to be addressed through awareness campaigns. The volunteers however observed that single use plastic waste has reduced to a large extent.
The SJC students expressed that the clean up was a good experience and an eye opener for them in that all of us have a role to play in keeping the city clean. “If everyone chips in and do our part by taking responsibility of our own waste then we can dream of a day when we won’t need town sweepers or social works. And towards that we can create awareness in our own little way and do our part by cleaning our own neighbourhoods,” they expressed.
