‘Live in harmony with local people’

Secretary, Land Resources, Government of Nagaland, Y. Kikheto Sema IAS has urged upon Naga students and communities in Shillong to live in harmony with the local people to foster brotherhood and oneness.

“People of northeast needs to come together and live in harmony with each other and Nagas staying in other states should be a living example for other communities,” Kikheto said at the 56th Freshers’ Social Meet of Naga Students’ Union Shillong at Naga Community Hall, Shillong on Wednesday.  

Speaking as the chief guest, Kikheto noted that the relationship between Khasis and Nagas were going on smoothly and also appealed the local people in Shillong to treat Naga people as their own brothers and sisters. He urged upon different Naga communities residing in Shillong to understand that the need of the hour was to unite the odds and bridge the gaps. He encouraged the students to continue remaining emotionally integrated and play their part in fostering unity among Naga people.  

Pointing out that there more than 11, 000 Naga students studying in Shillong, Kikheto also remarked on the financial side and said that Naga people were spending around Rs 132 crores annually if Rs 10, 000 was to be taken as an average expenditure per student annually.  

He lauded the Naga students in Shillong for remaining united at all times and urged them to give back to society what is due. Kikheto encouraged the students to approach things differently and avoid the traps of poor performers.  

Assistant Resident Commissioner, Nagaland House, Shillong, Pakon Phom encouraged the students to live upto the expectations of their parents and people back home since a lot of expenditure was being incurred in facilitating their education.  

“You are choosing your path and creating your own destiny and you have to approach your goals under the fear of the Lord,” he advised the students.  

During the programme, Chijangthung Yanthan and Sungjemtula Imchen were crowned Mr and Miss Freshers’ respectively.
