Longleng, August 10 (MExN): The district level seminar on ‘conserving biodiversity and threatened species in community conserved areas,’ was held at DC Conference Hall, on August 8, at Longleng with Khriekhoto Mor, Chairman, Nagaland Community Conserved Areas Forum (NCCAF) in the chair.
A press release issued by the Secretary, NCCAF stated that some of the resolutions made in the seminar were: to propagate and conserve biodiversity in respective localities; to ban uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources like hunting, fishing, logging, etc; to discourage the use of plastic and to discourage use of salt in plantation and fields.
The programme started with an invocation prayer by Y Nuklu Phom, former Executive Secretary, PCBA.
The special guest of the function, John Tsulise Sangtam, NCS DC, Tuensang, acknowledged the NCCAF for conducting such seminar in Longleng. He stated that the practices of hunting and usage of forest goods have exceeded sustainability that leads to over extraction or exploitation, which should not prolong anymore. “Realizing its importance, many villages have started conserving forest and wildlife which is very much appreciated,” he said.
Beizo Suokhrie, IFS, DFO, Longleng informed the gathering that JAICA project has provision to fund CCAs for expansion or such other initiatives; however it will be for the pre selected CCAs at the moment, but that the Forest Department is ready to lend support in any possible way for conservation work in the region.
Y Nuklu Phom, Member, State Biodiversity Board shared a power point presentation on “how humans have become their own created enemy” and “global warming,” which should be stopped without further delay. His presentation was based on the sacred gift of God to human beings in the form of environment/ecology and its relevance. He highlighted on possibility of creating an animal corridor by conserving forests along various stretches in the State and beyond.
Subin K.S of FES, in a power point presentation explained how the birds and animals are drastically decreasing due to its killing in large numbers. He emphasized on community conservation for the future generations.
Heirang Lungalang, Secretary, NCCAF presented a brief about the formation and present status of the Forum, while Tokugha Sumi, Joint Secretary, NCCAF shared on how we should revere the biodiversity and consider it our sacred duty to conserve nature.
