Longthonger green village inaugurated

Kiphire, January 30 (MExN): Nagaland Governor, Dr Ashwani Kumar on Wednesday inaugurated Longthonger, the first green village in Kiphire district. The village is located a few kilometers from the district headquarters. The Governor was accompanied by C Kipili, Parliamentary Secretary for power and T Torechu, Parliamentary Secretary for Excise, Legal metrology and consumer protection.

In his Inaugural speech, the Governor lauded the district administration, headed by the deputy commissioner and the supporting officials, for taking initiative to make Longthonger as the first green Village project a success. Stating that the green village initiative is a great achievement in contributing towards a better standard of living, the Governor also cited examples of villages in countries like Switzerland, where the environment is clean and healthy, contributing towards a better eco system.

The Governor also asked the district administration to introduce land use policies like those prevalent in neighboring state, where farmers are given loan for farming so that farming community can have a stable economy.

Presenting the concept note, DC Kesonyu Yhome said that the Green village initiative is an agenda for sustainable development taken up under the 13th finance commission, with the concept to disseminate the importance of conservation and also to conserve energy.

The deputy commissioner added that with the inauguration of the green village, this region will be seen in the green club map of the country and the globe. He stated that solar lights have also been provided to every household so that energy is preserved, which will be a small contribution towards the larger cause.

With the inauguration of the green village at Longthonger, the deputy commissioner expressed hope that this initiative would spread awareness on the importance of preservation and conservation of flora and fauna.
