Losami bans firewood sale

In what can be termed as an ecologically friendly decision and boost the efforts towards conservation of forest, the Losami Village Council under Phek district has banned the selling of firewood to outside the village. A minimum of five truckloads of firewood goes to outside customers daily, particularly Phek Town, Pftusero and Kohima.  The restriction is likely to help strengthen the village’s forest wealth to a great extent, a villager said.

The idea behind the restriction, according to a citizen,  is to discourage the large- scale felling of trees and to preserve the rich flora and fauna. Fine will be imposed against the defaulters, sources said. The village’s firewood registered high demand from the outsiders, particularly Phek district headquarters taking into account its high  quality.

An observer felt that nearer towns like Phek is likely to face a large amount of firewood shortage following the ban. The period of the restriction is not immediately known at the time of filling this report.
