Wokha, April 14 (MExN): In memorial of Lt Thungkhomo Ezung and Lt Chumdamo Tungoe ‘who laid down their precious lives during a silent protest in Wokha Town on April 14, 1977,’ the Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) observed black day at LSU Martyr's Park, Wokha town on April 14.

LSU in a press release stated that Lt Thungkhomo Ezung and Lt Chumdamo Tungoe were allegedly “shot dead by Nagaland Police” at Wokha on April 14, 1977 during a silent procession organised by LSU. The protest was held “against the inhumane and barbaric act meted out to the then SDO (Civil) Ngurkhuma Mizo who was manhandled by the Assam Police and Assam Forest Guard while protecting the legal rights for a land dispute at Ralan area under Wokha District,” the LSU release added.

‘The institutions under the jurisdiction of LSU also observed the black day with a silent prayer during the morning assemblies and by wearing black ribbon badge whilst narrating the brief history of the event to the students, as it marks a significant day for the LSU and the Lotha Community in general,’ it stated.

A minute of silent prayer was also observed where LSU President, Lirhonthung E Kithan gave a brief talk honouring the two “martyrs.” The LSU officials visited the burial site of Lt Thungkhomo Ezung and Lt. Chumdamo Tungoe and also the family members.
