Kohima, October 4 (MExN): On World Animal Day which is celebrated on October 4, the Veterinary Hospital Kohima has appealed citizens to not only love and care for the pets in our homes but also to appreciate and respect all wild animals, endangered species and those threatened by environmental devastation or lack of protection.

In a message on Saturday, the Veterinary Hospital Kohima underscored the importance of showing kindness and compassion towards animals and spreading awareness about their basic rights.

“Animals also have feelings and emotions just as human beings do. As such, it is the responsibility of every human being to love, care and protect our animals and prevent cruelty and all forms of abuse such as beating/hitting, forcing animals to struggle and work in extreme weather conditions, inhumane slaughter, etc,” the message read.

Stating that animals have as much of rights to live as human beings do, it also pointed out that humans “owe them much for our work, food, milk, eggs, companionship and all the joy and love they render to us.”

The least we can do for them is to provide them with their basic rights, it added.

Highlighting some of the basic rights of animals, it said that animals should be housed in safe and comfortable sheds with sufficient floor space allowing freedom of movement without overcrowding, obstruction or fear.

It also said that stray or homeless animals should be provided with shelter and food and any injured/sick/diseased animals should be treated with compassion. Animals should be treated with respect throughout their lives and provided with even more care during their old age, it said.

It also put across the need to provide adequate and well balanced diet with clean water.

It is the bounded duty of the owner to provide timely basic health facilities like vaccinations, deworming and regular health check-up of animals, it added.

Further, it said that Health Record Certificates for any animal that is to be transported from one place to another was mandatory.
