In a jaw-dropping upset at the Astro Turf Loyem Memorial Ground, the 31st Loyem Memorial Trophy witnessed an unexpected turn of events as Vetao Ayie FC, considered a formidable title contender, succumbed to Nyaklangbou Sector Youth Fellowship (NSYF) at the second semi-finals on October 26.

Right from the initial whistle, the match unfolded as a spectacular display of footballing artistry. Both teams showcased their skills, with NSYF’s fullbacks impeccably executing man-marking strategies to stifle Vetao Ayie’s forward flanks, disrupting early crosses and deliveries.

In the 37th minute, NSYF executed a flawless counter-attack, catching Vetao Ayie off guard. Lamsanggin found the net, sending shock waves through the Vetao Ayie fan-filled complex.

Leading the match, NSYF strategically shifted to a defensive stance, thwarting Vetao Ayie’s relentless attacks while seeking opportunities for counter-attacks. Both teams displayed unwavering temperaments, locked in a strategic battle.

The second half saw Vetao Ayie regaining momentum, employing a tiki-taka play style, and in the 79th minute, their talismanic striker, Longkhoi, revitalized their hopes with a magnificent free-kick just outside the penalty box.

With scores levelled, NSYF transformed their tactics into an offensive onslaught. In the 92nd minute of extra time, Chongshen scored, leaving Vetao Ayie in disarray. The atmosphere turned hushed, but NSYF wasn’t done. Lamsanggin secured a brace in the 94th minute and completed a hattrick with the team’s fourth goal in the 104th minute.

The upset marked a stark contrast to Vetao Ayie FC’s impressive run in the tournament. Known for their prolific scoring and beautiful matches, they were outpaced by NSYF’s swift play, leading to heartbreak for the Vetao Ayie fraternity.
