No repair/renovation done since 2007
Mon, August 27 (MExN): Highlighting the condition of the ‘neglected’ road in Longwa, the Longwa Students Union (LSU) on Thursday issued a press statement in a bid to draw the government’s attention on the same.
One of the biggest villages in Mon district and home to more than 5000 people, Longwa village also lies at the International Border of India and Myanmar, LSU said. The village is also one of the International Border Trade Centers in the state.
“Despite of its significance as a village, the developmental activities in the like of road is very much neglected,” LSU stated.
Owing to this, the Union said it was compelled to highlight the issue “after a long wait for the concerned authorities to act on the same.”
The Mon-Longwa road which covers 42 kilometers is said to be maintained by Border Roads Organization, LSU said.
Blacktopping of the road was done between 2005- 2007 and since then no proper renovation or repairing has been done, it claimed.
“Renovations were annually carried out but the worst affected parts which cover more than half of the total length are routinely neglected. Drainage remained deplorable as ever and the mud filled in the potholes worsens the condition of the road even more,” the LSU said.
Highlighting the deplorable road condition, the Union expressed concern at the ‘inaction’ of the concerned authority.
Stating that the road is the only lifeline of the people and other neighboring villages, LSU said that the poor road condition has made the lives of the public very difficult.
It has also been adversely affecting the flow of trade, transportation fares and market rate in the area, LSU pointed out.
“The Nagaland State Transport bus service between Mon and Longwa was also suspended some few years back because of the same reason,” it added.
In this regard, the Union appealed to the government and the authorities concerned to “immediately intervene on this issue post pandemic,” and to ease the untold hardships of the people.
