Wokha, February 11 (MExN): The ongoing indefinite bandh, initiated by the Lotha Civil Society Organisations in Wokha district, escalated further on Sunday when the Lotha Students' Union (LSU) urged the closure of all educational institutions within Wokha District.
In a 'formal request' to the All Nagaland Private Schools Association (ANPSA) Wokha Unit, the LSU called for the shutdown of educational institutions from Nursery to Degree Level under the purview of the Association.
The request stems from the ongoing issue related to the bandh of National Highway 2 passing through Wokha District, which has significantly disrupted the normal flow of traffic, posing potential risks to the safety and security of students, teachers and officials commuting to and from educational institutions, it stated.
However, the union said it acknowledges the importance of academic commitments, particularly for students appearing for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examinations, as well as teachers and officials engaged in examination duties.
Consequently, the LSU proposed that these individuals should be exempted from the aforementioned closure, ensuring that their educational pursuits remain uninterrupted.
"We kindly request that all educational institutions adhere to this directive and remain closed until further notice is issued," stated the LSU’s 'request' letter to the ANSPA.
"The safety and well-being of our students and educators are of paramount importance, and we trust that this decision will contribute to maintaining a secure and conducive learning environment," it added.
The Lotha CSOs had called for the indefinite bandh starting February 8, and on February 10, they locked the Deputy Commissioner's office and the SDO (NH) Wokha office. Additionally, there is a strict restriction on vehicular movement and commercial activities have been completely halted in the district.
Among other demands, the CSOs are pressing for the immediate resumption of construction at NH-2 (Old NH-61) from KM 72.40 to KM 83.00 in Wokha district, as well as, addressing various grievances already submitted in numerous correspondences and negotiations with the concerned authority.
