Padma Shree Mülhüpra Vero, popularly known as M Vero, ex-MP was laid to rest today at Runguzu Nasa under Chozuba sub-division of Phek district.


Thousands of people turned up at the funeral service and paid their last respect to the departed soul.
M Vero (1932-2020), the first Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland and also recipient of Padma Shree in 2006, passed away on January 24 in Dimapur.


Late Vero was the first Naga Rajya Sabha member having served two terms - March 18, 1964 to April 2,1968 then from April 3, 1968 to April 2, 1974. He was elected to Nagaland Legislative Assembly from NNO Party Ticket, representing 19th–Phek A/C in 1974. He was re-elected to Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1989 from Chozuba A/C and became a Cabinet Minister.


He was appointed as Chairman of the Liaison Committee of the Naga Hoho on October 31, 1995 and was elected as the first President of the Naga Hoho from 1998-2004.


As President of Naga Hoho, late Vero undertook tours in Nagaland and neighboring states including Kathmandu, Bangladesh border, Myanmar and Atlanta (USA) for reconciliation among Naga national political groups.


Those who spoke at the funeral service included: Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) President Mikha Kenye, Sumi Hoho former President Huska Yepthomi, MLA Dr Chotisuh Sazo, ex-MLA Nuzota Swuro, CPO former President Pusazo Lürüo and Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) President K Therie.


The service also witnessed words from family members – Zhothisa Dawhuo, Director, State Lotteries, Zhovehü Lohe, former speaker Nagaland Legislative Assembly and Ranyi Vero.


Rev Dr Zelhou Keyho, General Secretary Nagaland Baptist Church Council ministered the funeral rites.
