Madonna offends Two Countries in one show

Draping herself in Taiwan’s flag, Madonna actually managed to unite China and Taiwan in their outrage over her latest stunt. The Material Girl, who courts controversy, found it in her first concert in Taiwan Thursday night.   As part of her Rebel Heart Tour, Madonna, 57, draped herself in the island’s flag. This immediately sparked outrage in China. The Asian super power continues to consider Taiwan a province, not an independent country.   One Chinese fan tweeted, “Did you run out of your cone-shaped bras and had nothing better to wear?! Stupid Western woman with no modesty.”

By wearing the Taiwanese flag during the encore, Madonna’s gesture was considered an acknowledgment of the island as a nation. Complicating the matter is that she posted a photo of herself in a blue star design.   That design was used by a Taiwanese political party, the Kuomintang, known for the bloodiest era in Taiwan. During the communist takeover of Taiwan, the Kuomintang killed as many as 30,000.   That design lingers in the memory of many, though some in Taiwan were delighted and tweeted how much they loved Madonna.   For her part, Madonna seemed to revel in the experience and posted on Twitter: “Thank You TaiPei!! Your energy was electric and Amazing!#rebelhearttour”
