Maharashtra takes Dr T Ao Junior Girls National Football Championship crown

The winners of the Dr Talimeren Ao Junior Girls’ National Football Championship 2025-26 (Tier-2).

Maharashtra took the Dr Talimeren Ao Junior Girls’ National Football Championship 2025-26 (Tier-2) crown in a thrilling final at the Chümoukedima Football Stadium, Nagaland Police Complex, on December 11. Maharashtra defeated a spirited Uttar Pradesh 4 – 1.

The tournament featured 13 state teams, including Nagaland. It started on November 22. 

MLA and Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, S Keoshu Yimkhiung, who attended the closing ceremony, stated that the tournament upholds the legacy of the legendary Dr T Ao. Dr Ao captained the Indian national football team at the 1948 London Olympics, playing against France in their first match. Eight of the playing XI played barefoot attracting worldwide attention. That match also happened to be post-colonial, independent India’s first international football game.  

Commending the participants, the Advisor stated that the event indicated a promising future for women’s football in the country. He noted that despite diverse cultural backgrounds, the players stood united by their love for the sport.

Yimchunger extended gratitude to the Nagaland Football Association, the state government, and the organizing committee for successfully hosting the championship. He also acknowledged the efforts of coaches, officials, and volunteers in ensuring fair play.
