‘Mainstreaming gender and women empowerment for agri development’

Medziphema, May 27 (MExN): State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) in collaboration with State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) organised a three-day training on ‘mainstreaming gender & women empowerment for agriculture development’ for ATMA functionaries at SAMETI, Medziphema from May 24 to 26.  

The training, attended by ATMA functionaries from all districts of Nagaland, focused on creating consciousness and awareness as well as educating and sensitizing the participants about gender issues in general and the agriculture sector in particular.  

Resource persons for the training were Gracy Aye, State Coordinator, SRCW; Lanurenla Imchen, Advocate & Helpline Manager, 181; Chothalu Phesao, Senior Call Responder, 181- Women Cell Helpline; and Dr. Watila Jamir, Lecturer, Integrated Extension Training Centre (IETC), Department of Agriculture, Medziphema.  

The training began with ice breaking session and workshop expectations and later covered important topics on participation of women in agri work force - SWOT analysis, key concepts to gender mainstreaming and gender analysis, legal entitlements, government schemes and programmes for women, gender specific needs-sharing of experiences from the field, workshop closure and evaluation, gender relations and responsibility, gender discriminations and gender issues, division of labour in the society, gender community situation and self help group movement- challenges and way forward. The trainees were also given hands on exercise, the discussion of which were delivered and deliberated upon by all the participants.  

SRCW also distributed ‘Data Bank – A compilation of women centric schemes and programmes’ to the trainees free of cost to enable them to create, promote and popularise various schemes and programmes that are available for women. 

The valedictory function was chaired by Dr. Ithika C. Swu, DPD SAMETI, while feedback on the training was given by I. Nuchet, DPD Mokokchung and Chophabeni Kikon, ATM Wokha. Special guest and resource person Dr. Watila Jamir, Lecturer IETC in her speech challenged the participants to implement the training course into practice in their respective districts and sensitise the grassroots people on gender issues in order to enlighten them about the importance of women empowerment and other social issues.  

A press note stated that on the whole, the training saw a good turnout of participants from all districts of the state and concluded with distribution of certificates to the participants by the special guest.
