Mokokchung, March 18 (MExN): The Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection (LM&CP), Mokokchung in collaboration with People’s College Mokokchung and Institute of Communication and Information Technology (ICIT), Mokokchung celebrated World Consumer Rights Day 2018 at People’s College Mokokchung under the theme ‘Making digital marketplaces fairer’ on March 15.
A press release informed that Er. Ngangshimakok, Assistant Controller, LM&CP in the keynote speech highlighted that despite hundred of laws which deal with trade and commerce, the consumers are still cheated due to the ignorance of their own basic rights. Thus, in order to safeguard the consumers, the Consumer Protection Act 1986 was enacted which not only protects but also provides provisions for redressal against market abuses, social injustices and consumer education so that rights of all consumers are respected and protected, and to protest against those elements that undermine those rights, he stated.
Resource persons Er. Neisekho Chaya, Senior Lecturer, IT Department, ICIT and Er. Temjenmeren Longchari, Lecturer, Computer Department, ICIT cautioned that while making digital marketplaces more accessible to the consumers, the consumers must also have sound knowledge about internet security and set a strong password for safer and fairer digital transactions, the release said.
The invocation prayer was pronounced by Nungsanglila, HA, LM&CP, while the programme was chaired by Er. Noksangyuba Pongen, Inspector, LM&CP
Building on the success of the 2017 ‘Digital World Consumer can Trust’ campaign, the department in the press release affirmed that the 2018 campaign will aim to promote digital marketplaces that are more accessible, safer and fairer for consumers across the district and the State as well.
