Blossoms Pre-School organises workshop on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

A two day workshop on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities was organized by Blossoms pre-school, Mokokchung on May 26 and 27 with Dr. Y. Simpson, Developmental Pediatrics Unit, Christian Institute of Health Sciences (CHISR), Dimapur as the resource person.
The workshop was conducted for the teachers and parents of Blossom pre-school in order to create awareness on disabilities throughout Nagaland state. Day one of the workshop included training for the teachers and assessment of children with learning disabilities in the school.
A workshop exclusively for the parents was organized on the second day at Ongpangkong Salang, Mokokchung. Dr. Y. Simpson educated the parents on intellectual and developmental disabilities and how parents can diagnose the disability symptoms at an early age. He said that learning problem is increasing in our state and the demanding education is making it difficult for children to cope with the studies. He further added that parents should know the intellectual functioning of the child and take their children to clinical psychologists and special schools if they have any intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Sashinungla Nathan, proprietor and principal, Blossoms Pre-School, said that the workshop was organized in order to create awareness to the parents in particular and the public in general about learning disabilities. She said that many of the parents were unaware of the learning disabilities of their children which often puts a stress on the child and makes it difficult for them to cope with the learning.
It is to be noted that there are no pediatricians or child Psychiatrist in Mokokchung and to have a resource person like Dr. Y. Simpson in town was an opportunity for the parents and the children. Dr. Y. Simpson has a Ph.D in Special Education for Intellectually Disabled and 33 years of service in Christian Medical College Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Dr.Y. Simpson has started a school for children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities “Precious Gems School” in CHISR, Dimapur.
