A 40-year old man was arrested by the Kohima police on April 18 in connection with the rape of a minor. The victim was a 12 year-old girl, who was reportedly lured by the accused.
As per the Chakhesang Students’ Union, the incident occurred on April 17. A press release, issued by the CSU condemning the incident, held that the accused, one Yankiuba, “lured and abducted” the victim alongwith her younger brother around 5:30 pm on April 17, “on the pretext of buying candies.” The release added that at around 10:30 pm, the younger sibling “was left alone and the girl was taken away and eventually raped by the accused.”
When contacted for further details, the CSU’s Assistant General Secretary, Asalu Veswuh told The Morung Express that the Union was informed of the incident by the victim’s parents after which the police were informed. According to Veswuh, the child told her parents what happened to her. The accused, said to be a neighbour of the victim, was taken into custody at around 10:00 am today.
The Kohima Police was still to issue a statement on the incident at the time of filing this report.
The CSU release, while terming the act “inhumane and barbaric,” appealed the police “to investigate into the matter and expedite the case proceeding.” It said, “The perpetrator deserves non-negotiable punishment as per the law of the land. The Union expresses solidarity and sympathy to the victims and their family.”
