Till date, eight persons in Manipur quararantine centres have been jailed for violating Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

This development came four days after Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh had warned any inmate of quarantine centres not maintaining discipline or flouting the protocols will be jailed.

While observeing that lack of discipline among inmates in quarantine centres and violation of safety guidelines are the main reasons for the rise of COVID-19 cases in Manipur, the CM reiterated on Saturday that ‘mischievous inmates’ would be put behind bars.

Biren Singh said this while visiting a new COVID Care Centre opened at UNACCO School, Meitram in Imphal West district. He was briefed by Health Services Director Dr K Rajo and other officials outside the containment boundary of the Centre.

The Chief Minister then stated that it was encouraging that MLAs, civil society organisations and many student bodies are actively involved in imparting awareness to the inmates of quarantine centres so that they may understand the gravity of the situation and realize the importance of maintaining safety guidelines.

Biren Singh further said that around 48 patients are being treated in the new COVID Care Centre and the government is considering to increase the number of beds from 100 to 300. The Chief Minister also informed that necessary manpower has been deputed at the centre for proper care and treatment of patients.

The recovery rate of patients is also increasing, the Chief Minister said.

Stating that RIMS would not admit new COVID-19 patients now, the Chief Minister said that it would be kept as a general hospital while COVID-19 cases would be treated only in JNIMS, COVID Care Centre, Meitram and some district hospitals.
