Our Correspondent Imphal | January 6   Manipur Chief Minister today inspected major on-going projects in the state in the aftermath of Monday’s powerful earthquake that jolted the North East.   Ibobi visited IT Park at Mantripukhri here, Mega Tourist at Kheba Ching in Khongjom in Thoubal district and a 400 KV Mega Project at Thoubal Khunou. He was accompanied by officials of the Power Department, Manipur State Power Distribution Company Ltd and Manipur Development Society.

Eight people were killed and 106 injured in the devastating 6.8 magnitude quake which also destroyed scores of houses and other structures in Manipur before dawn.   Scientists have warned such powerful earthquakes can strike the North East at any time as the region falls in Zone V which is ‘very severe intensity’ zone.   As part of the relief measures being taken by the state government, a free health camp was held at Khangabok village in Thoubal. Volunteers of National Mobile Unit took part during the camp. Around 130 villagers were treated and given medicines.   Voluntary Health Unit Committee (VHUC) extended assistance to quake victims being treated at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.   According to VHUC, the state government has failed to provide any help to the victims so far and appealed to the latter to ensure timely assistance.   People for Animal, Manipur (PFA) joined the relief effort in Tamenglong district which was the epicentre of the strong tremor. Its volunteers distributed food items to villagers in Noney Part I, II, III and IV where PFA also treated animals. The PFA volunteers were assisted by leaders of Longmai Students’ Union and village chiefs.   A five-member team of the Manipur BJP led by its general secretary M Ashinikumar visited Kabui Khullen in Tamenglong yesterday. Kabui Khullen located some 37 km from Noney, was the epicentre of the earthquake.   The BJP team extended aid to the villagers affected by the tremor and more assistance was assured by the party during the trip, Ashinikumar told reporters at the party office here on Wednesday.   He said there were 20 unconscious people in the village where four persons were critically injured, 10 sustained minor injuries and over 54 houses were damaged due to the quake.   The BJP leader said the Manipur government has yet to give any assistance to the victims till today. He demanded that the government send an expert team to the district to assess the ground situation at an earliest.
