Imphal, February 11 (NNN): The Congress legislators from Manipur currently camping in New Delhi are planning to stage a protest demonstration on the streets in the national capital on Tuesday.
The legislators led by former Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and recently appointed Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Gaikhangam are lobbying MPs of Rajya Sabha to oppose the Bill if it is tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, the leaders said.
The delegation has already submitted memorandums to the President of India, the Prime Minister and the Union Home minister urging them to reconsider the passage of the Bill by the Rajya Sabha.
They had so far met with MPs of the Opposition bench in the Rajya Sabha besides meeting with AICC leaders and lobbied them to oppose the passage of the Bill, the state Congress claimed.
Meanwhile, leaders and workers of Opposition, the Congress in Manipur on Monday staged a sit-in-protest in front of Congress Bhavan at BT Road in Imphal, opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill which was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8 last.
Leaders of the party taking part in the protest expressed strong apprehension of tabling the contentious Bill in the Rajya Sabha for consideration and passing on February 12.
During the protest on Monday in Imphal, MPCC also strongly condemned the "excesses" meted out by the police to the women vendors of Ima Keithel while denying allegation levelled by state Forest and Environment minister Th Shyamkumar.
