With no response from the government side even after two days of mass casual leave, teachers of government colleges in Manipur on Saturday announced to go ahead with their class boycott stir from February 17.
As the government failed to issue orders, the agitations by the college teachers will be intensified with class boycotts from February 17, the Federation of Government College Teachers’ Association (FEGOCTA) announced in a statement.
Teachers of government colleges in Manipur have been agitating since January 28 last, demanding implementation of 7th UGC Pay and Regulations, 2018 in the state. As no positive response came forth even after 12 days of a series of sit-in-protest in the campus of their respective colleges, the teachers took two-day mass casual leave on Friday and Saturday.
As a result of two days of mass casual leave by the teachers, there were no classes for the second day in the government colleges. Normal academic atmosphere in the government colleges was severely hit, FEGOCTA said.
The present fifth agitations by teachers were compelled by the government’s failure to implement the cabinet approval on UGC policy, the teachers' association alleged.
Even as the state chief minister had expressed the government's willingness to hold talks with the agitating teachers, so far no invitation received, FEGOCTA said.
When the agitation of the teachers was raised and discussed by the house of state Assembly in the ongoing budget session, the chief minister had appealed to the agitating teachers to come to the negotiating table.
“Till today there is no invitation from the government,” FEGOCTA stated and reiterated that the only solution to the present agitation by FEGOCT is passing of the necessary orders to implement the 7th UGC Pay and Regulations, 2018, the statement added.
The 7th UGC Pay and Regulations, 2018 would have been implemented three years ago. FEGOCTA has been requesting for its implementation since December, 2018, the statement reminded.
